Your Petitioners are all natives of India and were

formerly known as the Indian Gaol Guards of the Vic-

toria Gaol and were on receipt of pay and allowances at the one uniform rate andwere only on duty for six hours daily.

In 1895 your Petitioners were divided into two classes, someea Assistant Wardersand some as Guards. The Assist- ant Warders were further sub-divided into three. grades first, second and third class, and the guards into first and second class, with increased duties and responsi-

bilities, and the hours of duty were extended to nine hours one day and ten hoursanother day. In spite of the apparent increase of rank, and real increase of respon- sibility, no increase of pay was, until quite recently ,granted to your Petitioners, although repeated applica- tions were made extending over a period of two yearé, and it was not until last June of last year, that new

rates of pay were fixed as follows:-

4 First class Assistant Warders $25permonth
